Future development of performance assessments

Joint statement on the introduction of APACS

Find out about the work of the Police and Crime Standards Directorate and its delivery partners to develop a new single performance framework under the working title of APACS – Assessments of Policing and Community Safety.

Performance framework for crime, drugs and policing

As part of wider Home Office reform plans announced by the Home Secretary in July 2006 the Home Office made a commitment to introduce a new, simplified performance framework for crime, policing and drugs.

The new framework is being taken forward under the working title of Assessments of Policing and Community Safety (APACS).  It will:

  • better align policies and actions in these important areas, and therefore  assessments of performance;
  • simplify national performance arrangements; and
  • take into account the relative seriousness of different issues.

The Minister for Policing, Security and Community Safety – Tony McNulty -met with representatives from the Home Office’s delivery partners in January to discuss the development of APACS.  They agreed to work in partnership with the Home Office to deliver a simplified framework over the coming year for introduction in 2008/09.

Tony McNulty wrote a letter PDF file PDF 423Kb, to stakeholders following this discussion and on 8 February the Home Office issued a joint statement PDF file 202Kb, with its partners setting out their high level goals, starting with the agreement of the strategic aims of the new framework
